Best-Selling Games of 2015

The NPD Group has just revealed the top 10 best-selling games of 2015. And, no, Star Wars Battlefront did not take the top spot despite riding the wave of the bank-breaking success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

The Call of Duty series makes a triumphant return to dominance by placing its flag at the top spot with Call of Duty: Black Ops 3.

Not only did the newest installment take the top spot for 2015, it also preserved the series’ six-year reign as the highest-selling video game series in the United States, taking the streak to a seventh consecutive year.

The series’ big comeback is a direct result of the publisher’s (Activision) decision to commit to a three-year development cycle with three different development studios in producing their annual releases. The move allowed each studio to have a maximum of three years to develop an installment in the series, ensuring that it’s not lacking in quality.

Other best-selling games of 2015

Taking the second spot in the best-selling games of 2015 list is another annual installment, this time in the sports genre: Madden NFL 16. The game is largely boosted by the massive popularity of American football in the United States (duh). Other annual sports video games that made the list are NBA 2K16 and FIFA 16, placing at 6th and 9th, respectively.

Despite the nature of sports games having relatively few changes in their annual installments, they are still reliable money-makers due to the popularity of their respective sports.

Placing 3rd on the list is Bethesda’s critically acclaimed action role-playing game, Fallout 4, despite being released late in the year (November). The massive anticipation of the post-apocalyptic game combined with the universally praised gameplay mechanics allowed it to catch up with the games released earlier in the year.

Coming up 4th is Star Wars Battlefront, the reboot of the Battlefront series. Despite having mixed reviews due to its incomplete form, the game managed to successfully ride the momentum of the latest installment in the Star Wars film saga. The game was actually released before the film, so it undoubtedly gained more sales as soon as the acclaimed film broke out in theaters.

Rounding up the top 5 is Grand Theft Auto V by Rockstar Games. The critically acclaimed game was mostly notable for being the first game to have three playable main characters, giving more perspective to the story.
